All osteopathic medical students receive 200-400 hours of specific training in osteopathic principles and practice during their first two years. As with any other medical specialty, motivated students must seek out other opportunities
During osteopathic medical school:
- Each school has a local chapter of the Student American Academy of Osteopathy focused on bringing together motivated students and holding low cost courses and events.
- Elective and required rotations with physicians who practice osteopathy
- Undergraduate fellowships where students spend an extra year in medical school as osteopathic teaching assistants and working in clinics while receiving a stipend.
Postgraduate Residencies/Fellowships leading to Board Certification
- Two year residencies in Osteopathic Neuro-Musculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) following a general rotating (transition year) internship
- One year plus one ONMM residency following any other type of residency.
- Combined four year Family Medicine/ONMM or Internal Medicine/ONMM
Throughout training and in practice:
- CME Courses and Conferences held by regional and national organizations including the American Academy of Osteopathy (Convocation and other events), Osteopathic Cranial Academy (Annual Conference and courses), Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation, Osteopathy's Promise in San Diego, CA, the ASSSG, Biodynamics groups, etc.
