Learning osteopathy during your clinical years is challenging for many reasons. -
- On most rotations, there are rarely preceptors to train you.
- Many attendings may not be supportive of you practicing on their patients.
- Even with permission, there is not always enough time to treat someone.
But unlike any other osteopaths in the world, US DOs in training have the opportunity to see patients with all varieties of conditions and levels of acuity, from pediatrics to geriatrics, from the ER to the nursing home. The key to learning is to focus on diagnosis and not treatment. Simply adding an osteopathic screening exam to your evaluation of all patients will teach you so much.
